Native Habitat: Swamps, wet woods 
Flowering Characteristics: Corolla and calyx lacking, flowers white, tiny, and numerous in a slender tapering stalked spike with drooping tip.
Native Range: Ontario to Rhode Island, CT, and NY, S. to Florida; W. to Texas, Missouri, and Kansas;N. to Illinois and Michigan.
Flowering expected: June - September
Comments:
This is a mostly southern species of shaded marshes and stream margins. The common name and genus name, from the Greek sauros ("lizard") and oura ("tail"), depict the shape of the drooping flower cluster.

Native Habitat: Ponds and slow streams.
Flowering Characteristics: Petals 5, white, united at the base.
Native Range: Southern New Jersey to Florida; west to Texas.
Flowering expected: July - September
Comments:
Deciduous rhizomatous perennial with small, floating, mid-green leaves, often splashed with brown, up to 8 inches across but usually smaller. Small yellow or white flowers (depending on species, yellow=N. peltata and white=N. indica) are held 2-3 in above the water. Leaves heart shaped and much smaller than Nymphaea. Marginally hardy. Best in water 6-18 in deep.
